A Fall Day in Port Jefferson, Walked Slowly
Port Jefferson is a harbor village on the north shore of Suffolk County, and the attractions listed by the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce carry addresses on only a handful of streets: East Broadway, West Broadway, Main Street and Prospect Street. That makes a slow loop on foot easy to plan. This guide follows those streets in turn, starting at the waterfront, and then sets out the fall events that have published 2026 dates. Hours and seasons are given as the listings state them; several are limited, and a few may already be winding down for the year.
Starting at the harborfront
Harborfront Park sits at 101-A East Broadway and is described by the Chamber as a waterfront park with views of Port Jefferson Harbor. It is the natural first stop, partly because several other listings share the address or the block. The Port Jefferson Village Center at Harborfront Park is listed as open Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with changing art and photography exhibits, classes, group activities and a Sunday farmers market. The same listing mentions skating on the harbor from November to March, which falls just after the late-October window.
Next door, the Chandlery Building at 101 East Broadway houses the Long Island Explorium, which the Chamber describes as offering interactive exhibits and programs centered on Long Island’s maritime history. The Chamber does not list visiting hours for it, so the schedule is worth checking before a trip planned around it.
The Bayles Boat Shop operates from Harborfront Park as well. According to the Chamber listing, its hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, plus Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. A boat shop with limited hours is easy to miss on a casual afternoon, so a morning visit on one of those days is the likelier way to see work under way.
The village’s own site describes Harborfront Park and the Village Center as venues for educational and social activities, historic exhibits, outdoor movies and concerts, and credits the harbor with calm waters and deep draft that draw boaters. That page carries a mid-2024 update date on its home page, so its event lists should be treated as background rather than a current calendar. The Village of Port Jefferson’s welcome page is the place to start for municipal information.

West Broadway: the ferry and the marina
West Broadway holds the working side of the waterfront. The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, which runs the Port Jefferson Ferry and offers special tours, is listed at 102 West Broadway. A short distance along, at 118 West Broadway, the Town of Brookhaven Marina is the base for several charter operators listed by the Chamber, including fishing boats and a tiki boat that runs public cruises. The Chamber’s own office uses the same 118 West Broadway address.
The Schooner Liberty Clipper, a 125-foot tall ship the Chamber describes as Long Island’s largest, is listed at Harborfront Park, with two-hour sails offered in day, sunset and private formats. The Chamber’s note says sailings began June 14, but that page does not state a closing date for the season. Anyone hoping for a late-October sail should confirm availability directly.
Watching boats come and go from the sidewalk fills a natural pause in the loop. Schedules and fares for the crossing belong to the ferry operator, and the operator’s website is the reliable source for them.
The Mather House Museum complex
The walk turns uphill to 115 Prospect Street, where the Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson maintains the Mather House Museum complex. The Chamber describes it as a group of historic buildings and collections, including the home of nineteenth-century shipbuilder John T. Mather, a collection of about 250 antique clocks and recreated shops. The society’s About page adds ship models, half-hull models, period furniture, paintings by local artists William Davis and Leon Foster Jones, shipbuilding and sail-making tools, vintage clothing, and antique games and toys.
The society, founded in 1967, says its purpose is to “discover, preserve, and disseminate knowledge about the history of the Greater Port Jefferson area.” A docent-guided tour is available for the main museum and the complex buildings, and a donation is requested.
Timing matters here. The society states that the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. starting Memorial Day weekend and running through mid-October, and its home page repeats the Wednesday-through-Sunday, noon-to-4 schedule. Since mid-October is the end of that stated season, a call to (631) 473-2665 or a check of the society’s site is the safest way to confirm whether the doors are open. The same home page announces a country auction on October 17, 2026, with a preview listed as live.
A separate listing, the Drowned Meadow Cottage Museum at 141 West Broadway, is described by the Chamber as displaying research by historian Mark Sternberg on the Brewster family and the Culper Spy Ring. Its listed tour dates are July 4 and 5, so it is a seasonal stop rather than a fall one.

Main Street and live theatre
Theatre Three at 412 Main Street is listed by the Chamber as presenting musicals, plays and concerts year-round. The theatre’s own website shows these 2026 dates: Cabaret on the mainstage from September 19 to October 25, and the children’s production Elephant & Piggie’s We’re in a Play! from September 25 to October 24. Later in the season, A Christmas Carol is scheduled from November 7 to December 27, and the children’s show Barnaby Saves Christmas from November 21 to December 27. One special event, The New York Bee Gees, is listed for a single night on November 19.
Main Street also holds Muse Paintbar at 134 Main Street, which the Chamber lists as offering weekly painting classes.
Fall events with published 2026 dates
The Chamber’s events calendar lists several seasonal programs. Each of these pages carries 2026 in its title or dates.
- Scarecrow Walk. Scheduled from October 5 to November 2, 2026, along East Main Street, with an online vote for a favorite scarecrow. The event page lists 18 entries.
- Self-Guided Fall Art Walk. Scheduled from October 9 to November 6, 2026, with work by local artists; the festival page describes artwork from 20 local artists at participating locations. The event page does not name a single meeting point or list hours.
- Harvest Festival. Scheduled for October 17 and 18, 2026. The festival page lists a costumed dog parade, a pie baking contest, a children’s show titled Hugh Stinkfoot and the Spooky Terrible Day!, the scarecrow voting and the art walk. Activity passes are sold through an online ticketing page, and the festival page lists no prices. The Chamber’s home page shows the festival running from noon to 5 p.m.
- Chowder Crawl. Scheduled for October 24, 2026, with a food crawl ticket listed at $30 on the ticketing page. The page states that all proceeds go to the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, and the Chamber’s home page lists the event from noon to 3 p.m.
- Festival of Trees. Listed on the Chamber’s home page for December 1 to January 2 at the Port Jefferson Village Center.
The village’s welcome page also lists a Charles Dickens Festival among its annual events, but this guide does not repeat a date because no 2026 date was found on an official page.
Other waterfront listings
Beyond the sights already described, the Chamber’s attractions page lists two fishing operators, Celtic Quest Fishing and the Osprey Fishing Fleet, both at the Town of Brookhaven Marina on West Broadway. Each is described as running full-day, half-day, morning and afternoon trips. The page also notes Rocketship Park, a playground on Maple Place between Mill Creek Road and Barnum Avenue, which is listed separately from the harbor-front addresses.
Each operator sets its own season, and none of the listings above promises trips in late October. Confirming directly with the operator is the sensible step before building a day around a charter or a sail, since the Chamber’s page is a directory and not a booking calendar.

Suggested pacing for the loop
A reasonable sequence runs West Broadway first, then East Broadway, then Main Street, and finally Prospect Street, with the museum placed last or first depending on the day’s hours. Because most museum and boat shop schedules are limited to afternoons or specific weekdays, building the walk around those windows is more practical than the reverse. Village-wide events such as the Scarecrow Walk and Art Walk require no timed entry, which leaves room to wander between the fixed points.
The village publishes a downloadable walking map hosted by TBR News Media, linked from the Chamber’s home page. The page identifies the file as a 2024 edition, so businesses on it may have changed.
Parking and getting there
The village’s welcome page says visitors can arrive by car, train, ferry or boat. It does not give current parking rules, permit requirements or rates, and the Chamber’s home page points to separate parking information maintained for the village and for the Town of Brookhaven marina lot. Because those details were not available on a fetched page with a current date, readers can confirm parking directly with the village and the town before going.
